T Touching The Void
In the first paragraph the writer feels worried, scared, anxious and he feels like his life is going to end because he has been hanging there for ages and he was going to fall. To show this he says ' There was no need for this torture. I wanted with all my heart for this to finish.'
His fears were that he was going to fall and he was pulling Simon down with him. He must still be thinking of his broken leg while he is hanging but not as much as falling. He must fear what Simon is going to do. To show his fear he says' I wonder how deep I will go? To the bottom ... to the water at the bottom? God! I hope not!'
The passage ends by him falling. He says' as if dreaming of falling' this means that it felt like how he was dreaming it would feel like.
Four ways of what he used to build tension are:
A viewpoint that involves the reader (makes them see as character sees, sharing partial discovery).
Varied sentence length or structure.
Punctuation that acts to slow down or speed up the pace.
Powerful verbs or verbs that add doubts and fears and expectations ('seemed', 'might have been')
